Solareye - The Pageant EP

Written, recorded and released in a month, The Pageant, is a collection of stories and meanderings; grim fairytales and unlikely truths; ripples and reflections narrated by Stanley Odd rapper, Solareye.

Featuring Louie (Hector Bizerk) and Tickle (Black Lantern) and produced by Dunt (ABAGA Records) and the elusive Harvey Kartel, the EP weaves unsteadily through a carnival of paranoiacs, oddities and misfits.

The Pageant is available now as a free download - get it HERE. You can also check out the video for lead single The Pageant below. Solareye and Harvey Kartel will be performing live on the 21st Nov at Bloc, Glasgow, supporting Hector Bizerk and on the 22nd Nov at Electric Circus, Edinburgh, supporting The Milk.

Stanley Odd - The Oddyssey (Video & Free Download)

New video from Scotland's Stanley Odd. Basically bringing some Rap-Up style lyrics about the year that has just passed, over a trademark electric guitar and bass backing track. The video is little pedestrian, but the tune is dope. I wonder whether Mystro will be able to top it when he drops the UK 2010 Rap Up...

If you're feeling the track, download it for free from their Bandcamp page:

'Oddio' - Stanley Odd (review)

One of my favourite albums at the moment? Easy. Stanley Odd's 'Oddio'.

Now, as you may have noticed, Scottish Hip Hop usually doesn't sit too well with me - mainly because it's all fairly angry and aggressive which is not the sort of thing I listen to for pleasure even if I can appreciate the craftsmanship. Stanley Odd are a band made up of members of different nationalities but the MC who fronts the band is definitely a Scotsman.

Solareye is the man in question and his outlook on life is as cynical as the next Scottish person's but his wry twist and LOL-inducing lyrics are something else. I could finish off this review just by quoting some of his lines ("The next generation are counting on us/So let the pregnant women sit down on the bus", "I've not been in a good mood lately/Cos cats lack passion like the makings of a test tube baby", "She said 'Who in their right mind takes a horse tranquilizer?'/I wasn't in my right mind so I couldn't advise her"... I could go on but I won't).

Solareye is backed up by the lucious vocals of Veronika Electronika who provides both sung choruses and half-rapped, half-sung verses as well as just general beautiful noises (check 'Sun Dance' to really get what I mean).

The whole album gots that funk that only a live band could produce and tracks like 'Your Move' will more than certainly bring an insane grin to your face as you tune into the solidity of the musicianship of Rune Dawg, T Lo, AdMac and B Dot.

'Oddio' is out now on Circular Records and you must, must buy it. It's available on itunes now.

'The Numbness' - Stanley Odd (single review)

Seems like it’s every other day that I’m telling you about some new Scottish-based Hip Hop. Here’s some more – with a twist.

Stanley Odd are a six-piece live Hip Hop band with members from Norway, Germany and Scotland. Their new track ‘The Numbness’ features Solareye’s confident and cheeky rhymes (“I woke up with no shoes, my wallets missing//And I’ve enough guilt to jump start Catholicism”) and Veronika Electronika’s lovely singing and it’s top stuff. With the chance of mass appeal Stanley Odd should keep the good work up.

‘The Numbness’ is released on 17th October on Circular Records.
