Cons - June Bug Soon Come... free D/L

Conspicuous or Cons as hes currently goin under has put in alot of work and put out some classic material in his time, from gems like Therapy with the legendary Colony to anthems like Want Me Back hes always delivered that authentic, soulfull, true school sound. June Bug Soon Come offers a taster of his next LP proper ''June Bug'' that will be released on June the 6th, bet you didnt see that coming. Cons reunites with Colony members willo, smurf and grimlock as well as regular collaborators seanie t and TB. Cons hasnt slept on the production either with Apa-Tight, 7th Dan, Jabba Tha Kut and himself on the beats. After a quick 1st listen I wasnt dissapointed at all Cons doesnt shift to far from his usual autobiographical social commentary, hes quick to cut a popstar down and always seeking recognition and respect. The dude knows how to pick and make a dope beat too he also works-in original and catchy hooks often blending vocal samples to great effect. As a LP this mixtape is pretty good as a free mixtape, proberly consisting of tracks that didnt make the album cut, this is exceptional and free HERE

'Now You Know' ft. Pace Won by Amass Hegemony Coming Soon!

Just been previewing some new music by some of the UK's hardest working artists - Beit Nun and 777, collectively known as Amass Hegemony. Their next release is going to be a Maxi-Single (remember those?) called 'Now You Know' and it features Pace Won from The Outsidaz (y'know, they're affiliated to Eminem and Bizzarre somehow).

Title track 'Now You Know' is pure hungriness over a heavy, no-nonsense beat. Jabba The Kut remixes it with more of a soulful, bouncy feel - nice.

The release will feature cuts from Jabba Tha Kut and Irn Mnky and production from Wizard, Defftone, IllSkilz and Jabba Tha Kut and the following album will feature Pace Won, No Pretense and Dan Bull. Stay tuned for more.

'The DJ Sessions' - VA - Jabba Tha Kut (Mix CD review)

Blam! Jabba Tha Kut’s new double mix CD could be decribed with that one word. It’s terrific! Jabba has selected just under 20 of the best UK tunes and the same amount of US tunes and has mixed, cut and blended them together most expertly to create a pretty joyful listening experience.

I couldn’t have chosen a better play list myself – familiar and now-familiar tracks form a back-to-back wall of thumping Hip Hop. The opening tracks on both the UK and the US CD absolutely bang – Constant Creation’s anthem ‘Staying Hardcore’ and ‘Do It Now’ by Mos Def and Busta Rhymes are so heavy! English guests include Sir Smurf Lil, Triple Darkness, Skibadee, Brotherman, Jack Flash, Lowkey, Dirty Diggers and Kyza. On the US disc you get the aforementioned Busta and Mos, Sean Price, Marco Polo, O.C., CL Smooth and Reks. The underground is thouroughly represented on both CDs with the lesser known names providing absolute fire to rival the famous guys.

This one will definitely be returning to all manner of music players in my life and I can honestly say it has put me onto a few artists who I’ll be looking out for – Aboriginals for example, who appear to be a modern day Native Tongues – lovely. Thanks Jabba and HHB Radio!

It's being released on 23rd February 2009 and if I were you I'd go here to find out more and to buy it!

Wolftown Update

As usual the Wolftown crew are on their grind. The latest offering from their midland camp is the '100% Exclusive Mixtape & DVD'. It features tracks from everyone you'd expect: 10Shott, Tricksta, Late, Size8, Conman and Jai Boo. It also features tracks from artists recently taken uner the Wolftown wing and other up and coming UK artists. This essentially is the latest in the 'UK Runnings' series and so far they've all been fire.

As the name suggests, it also comes with a DVD featuring interviews and music videos by Blak Twang, Million Dan, Conman, Jabba Tha Kut, Late, Jai Boo, Size8 & 10Shott and more. Check back here to find out more about what I think of this CD once I hear it.

Meanwhile, you can be checking out the plethora of other recognisably presented Wolftown releases from this year:

'Two Cities' - Modulok & Bare Beats (album review)

With a good mix of dusty jazz, 50’s film suspense music and punchy drums Bare Beats creates a concrete foundation for Canadian MC Modulok (no not the two headed red freak from Masters of the Universe!) to build upon. Modulok constructs a solid structure; think if you will, of a factory or mill from the industrial revolution. This is no shiny girders-and-glass, yuppie flat project although the instrumentals would also suit an MC who was that way inclined. Modulok, of Toronto’s Red Ants, has perhaps interpreted these beats in a way that no other MC would; twisting them to his own purposes.

Each of the 10 tracks (11 if you count the ‘hidden’ one) has a clear manifesto. ‘Intro’ actually introduces the artists and the collaboration, ‘Happiness’ is really about unhappiness, ‘City’ symbolically describes urban life and so on. You wont be left wondering what Modulok is on about. That’s not to say these are nursery rhymes, it’s just that Modulok and his guests are communicators. Lyrics like “One day you wont be able to tell where Modulok stops and the city begins to swell” are replete with imagery yet they convey exactly how the MC feels – it’s poetic.

Story telling is also strength. ‘Grimy’ tells a tale of rejection as a result of a woman’s desire for wealth. ‘Stories’ is in a classic mould; 3 accounts of different people’s life changes. ‘Assassin’ is a first person shoot-em-up that I’m sure must be a metaphor for something.

Guests come in the form of old Bare Beats collaborators (Perry Scaramanga, Kal Sereousz and Smokey on ‘Trouble’), fellow Torontoans (Apollo Creed and Baracuda), UK scratchmaster Jabba Tha Kut and beatboxer Wireless.

This album is on Bare Records, is available now from (and can be listened to at) the Modulok and Bare Beats myspace for only £6.99 and that pays for it to get right to your crib too. If you’re a fan of indie Hip Hop, good production and poetic but understandable lyrics then grab yourself a copy of ‘Two Cities’. If you fancy a free taster of what these boys are capable of you can have one from here.
