Skuff - Deep Covers

Skuff produced one of my favourite LPs of all time in 2006 with 'End of the World News' so I'm always ready to listen to what the man's got to say and he delivers plenty of outstanding rhymes over bootlegged beats including Nas' Purple, The Game's Dreams and Outkast's B.O.B as well as a couple of random homegrown bangers. Skuff flips hooks and rhymes from the original tracks, hence the title of this free mixtape 'Deep Covers', as well as delivering his usual autobiographical steeze and extensive vocabulary. Not many MCs can use such a vast range of words while still being entertaining and applying so much emotion to there vocal delivery. Download 'Deep Covers' for free HERE or follow the above player. As Skuff states on the bandcamp page 'this album will probly never be finished' so expect more of the same somewhere in the future....

AD - And check out the 'End of the World News' album that Josh mentioned on the same bandcamp page. Available to download for just 2 of your pounds. Bargain, genuinely top album.

'Somebody's Watching Me' - Marvin (free download)

Marvin (formerly Marvin the Martian) has just dropped this mixtape via his blogspot.

Marvin streams consciousness over previously ignorance covered instrumentals (I think, I'm only guessing, I don't really listen to ignorant rap but it sounds like some these beats once belonged to some gangsta wannabe's - no offence if they didn't). There are instrumentals from the likes of Masta Ace and Joell Ortiz on here too so it's not all like I just said!

Anyway, tracks like 'Line for the Toilet' commentate on situations and ideas that Marvin has an opinion about and he does it in an entertaining way.

Hip Hop Kemp Mixtape (free download)

Hip Hop Kemp, the 3 day Hip Hop festival in the Czech Republic is over now and if like me, you didn't go (thinks: Summer Hols next year?) then you can download a mixtape that features a load of the big tracks from it, some being Certified Banger favourites. Favourites namely being Jack Flash, Skreintax and Stig of the Dump.

You can visit the website to find out more about what went on and who performed. There are all sorts of photos to look at, quality photos I must add and you can check out the low ticket prices as a means of tempting yourself next year.

Download it here. The tracklist goes a little something like this.

A Party Jam For A Not Average Man

Not content with having the Canaries AND the beloved Delia Smith, Norwich now has Gordon Bennett Records (great name, I know) to be proud of too! (And yes, that's all I know about Norwich). It's their 'positive yet comical outlook' that reminds you that 'Oh yeah, Hip Hop's meant to be fun innit?!'

On 'Take The Sun Away', Diagnostik demonstrates the angle from which GB are coming: 'It's getting a little bit difficult trying to be original//Tasting the talented run-off and the creative residual'...well he kinda does, that second bit sounds cool but its the first line that makes sense to me: it's not easy to make good, original Hip Hop, it's meant to be hard but these guys have tried and have pulled it off.

Featuring artists with strange names such as Crow Stick, Purple Turkey and Chuck Dangerfield this cheeky compilation will appeal to those fans of all that Hip Hop coming straight outta Brighton, Norwich must be also riding and surviving off those good time vibes too. Raptilian provides us here with the ingeniously entitled track 'Pass the Parcel', I mean, who doesn't love Pass the Parcel?!

It's not just Hip Hop here, that oddly coloured poultry provides some breaksy beats and some comedy Scruff-esque type trumpety goodness. This really could provide you with a nice little soundtrack to a gathering of you and your mates (as long as you're not the average type of blokes/blokessess that is) and all you have to do is visit Gordon Bennett's website, send them a quick email and they'll send you a download link! Another Freebee CD for y'all to vibe wit' and meanwhile, try these for size:

Diagnostik - Take the Sun Away
Raptilian - Pass The Parcel ft. Mojangle, Microphile & RZ

Purple Turkey - I'm a Bassist
Chuck Dangerfield - Let It Be Done (Just Chill)

Wordsmith's '08 retrospective

For those who haven't been aware of what Wordsmith's (The American Wordsmith, that is) been up to so far this year HipHopDX.com and DJ Denox have put together 'The Mid-Year Review Mixtape'. Along with the trendy-cool artwork (take note those who are planning a free mixtape release - we all still love dope artwork). The press info tells me that it will 'keep your heading nodding for over an hour and some change' but I'm sad to report it wont. Because according to my itunes it's only actually 42 minutes something long. No bad thing really.

Anyway, Wordsmith has obviously been busy making some cracking music and is a dab hand at telling those stories that we Hip Hop fans love so much. The tracklist is as follows:

01. The Soulless Saint (Produced by Strada)
02. Grudge of a Madman Remix (Produced by Capish & Wodzu)
03. Danger Zone Feat. Black Knight (Produced by Professa)
04. Quest for My Existence (Produced by Professa)
05. The Missing Element (Produced by DJ Denox)
06. Dreamin' of Superstardom (Produced by Capish)
07. Scrapbook Vol. 1: The MC Years (Produced by DeMo)
08. Word's Signing Day Freestyle feat. Kontact & Black Knight
09. Above Average Status feat. RhymeZwell & Black Knight
10. The FunkBox Remix feat. Kontact & SoL, Black Knight & RhymeZwell (Produced by Capish)
11. Park & Ride (Produced by Strada)
12. A Psychedelic Side to Love feat. SoL tha Analyst (Produced by Street Level)
13. Diaries of Deception feat. D-Dub, Deedaman & Black Knight (Produced by Strada)

You can download yours here now but be warned, it's one of those all-in-one-trackers (hence the tracklist above).

And for your summer in the drop top on the way to the BBQ having just shined your paintwork needs here's 'Park & Ride'.
Oh and, 200th post!

K9 - 2 free mixtapes!

I've become quite the herald of legitimate free music haven't I? That's because I'm too poor to be buying loads of music at the moment so it's a good thing that that coincides with all these guys giving out their music for free!
Well, K9, Blak Twang's mate is giving away two of his mixtapes as downloads at his myspace page. 'The Riot Storm' was in Disorda's (over at Suspect Packages) top ten mixtapes for a fair while so it's defo worth checking it out, it'll save you £5.99 plus p+p too!

If you've never heard K9 then download this and enjoy the straight up-ness of this Hip Hop. Also check the 'Jim Westwood Album' - any mimickry of the Big Dog is good, it's all love though! Blak Twang also puts in a few appearances and he's one of the architects of the classic UK sound, he really changed things way back when he dropped 'Dettwork South East' and '19 Long Time'. Don't sleep on this.

Aggi Dukes - The Best Kept Secret Free Mixtape

On Friday I came across a new artist (well new to me), Aggi Dukes. He was playing at the preview for a new independent film called 'Deadly Whispers'. I was invited as 10Shott got a last minute slot to perform there of the back of another TV performance (but more about that later). As it happens, Aggi is treading the ever more popular path of releasing a free download mixtape and his is called 'The Best Kept Secret'. Aggi has great verve and a powerful quality to his voice and basically anything free is worth checking at least once.

Bow E3 resident, Aggi's greatest claim to fame so far is that he has a track featured on the oh so entertaining FIFA Street 2. On Friday he also performed the track 'Casper's Birthday' which samples The Specials' anti-Thatcher track, 'Ghost Town'.

Tor - Beatz in the Capital

More free music! This is really catching on innit? This is a promotional tool for Tor's forthcoming long player, and by golly, I must just buy it so impressive is this mixdownload (it aint or tape or CD). 'Beats International: Journey To The Album' is apparently due to drop in June so we can all save our pennies and bump this until then.

'Beatz...' is nice introduction to the East London born MC. There are some 'freestyles' (read 'verses over other beats') and some remixes and together these make for a showcase of her skills.

Beats are chosen well; my favourite has to be her wonderful take on Wu-Tang's 'M.E.T.H.O.D. Man' and tracks from Lupe, Baby J and TI also get blessed. The remix of 'Strivin' by DJ Mentat is top class stuff and it features a pretty chilled out Klashnekoff. Faith SFX also busts some beatboxing as Tor raps quite jawdroppingly on 'Faith SFX Jam'. Following Bashy's success with 'Black Boy's' Tor has recorded, yes you guessed it, 'Black Girls' and its proper.

If you're in Japan you get to pick up the album next month but this mix should be enough for you now. And please don't be put off by the fact she's a female. I know there aren't many good ones but there are a few and Tor is one of them. Take notice of this girl because she out-raps most of your favourite MC's. Respect.

Download the mix here and see her myspace here.

Tor - Black Girls
Tor - Method Man Freestyle
Tor - Time of Reflect vs. Baby J
Tor - Superstar.mp3
Tor - Faith SFX Jam
Tor - Strivin' Harder ft. Klashnekoff (DJ Mentat remix)

UK Royal Fam Vol. 3

When it comes to walking the fine line between Hip Hop and Grime in the UK there a few names that might spring to mind. Someone whose mind it obviously sprung to was the guy who track listed ‘The UK Royal Fam Mixtape Vol. 3’. Lethal Bizzle, JME, Skepta, Wiley, Ghetto, Klashnekoff, Roll Deep, Bigz, Bashy, Sway, Pyrelli…the list does go on. Believe this mixtape is big, if this type of music is your bag.

Also it’s not so much of a mixtape, more of a tape, well, a CD. It’s just the full tracks collected and sequenced – and I like it that way. And don’t make the mistake I did when I had the 1st instalment (which actually was pretty poor): I thought it was called the ‘Royal FARM Mixtape’! Ha! What an idiot I am.

This particular sub genre of Hip Hop is probably at it’s apex right now. It’s so full of energy yet it’s not as underdeveloped as it was and it’s not got too big for it’s own boots (that’s why Dizzee aint on here!) – it’s in that good old middle ground like Hip Hop was in the 90’s; it’s just coming of age.

It’s hosted by Manchester bod Solja too, who I once encountered outside of a J5 show in Manchester as he hustled his CD to my brother. Solja, shows promise here as one who may ride the dual waves of interest in the Manc scene and the aforementioned impending maturity of Hip Hop/Grime crossover music – usually poorly labelled as ‘Urban’.

It’s actually hard to pick a standout track here, it’s all surprisingly quality! Sincere’s ‘Once Upon a Time’ which features one of radio’s current pets, Natty (even my Dad liked him after seeing him on Jools Holland) is pretty jolly, it’s just annoying that it fades out (good job I've got the full track already then). Either of the Ghetto tracks display that raw rawness that can only be described as raw – check out 'Who's Got'. ‘What’s Your Grind’ comes courtesy of Swiss and has a beat that makes me say ‘Yeah, nice’, so that’s good innit? He talks about something we can all to relate to – the 9 to 5 grind, I know it’s been done, but, he does it well so it’s OK. Lethal Bizzle’s genre bending track ‘Police on my Back’ is here too - a fantastic ode to TWOCing. Skepta's tune 'Blood, Sweat & Tears' is awesome for managing to reference Rosa Parks and Pogs in the same track amongst other great things too.

The last point I must make is that this is free. A great chance to see what this side of UK things is really about because this does feature top album tracks and not just hastily recorded ‘exclusive’ freestyles over someone else’s beats. Go get it.
