Three Kings High - Tell Em Lies (video)

Something a little different now... Here's a vid from a band fronted by Chattabox of Dialect. The hip-hop/funk/soul band is probably nearer a cliche than a novelty by now, but if you can nod your head to the tunes, then so what...

Chattabox & Samuel Otis - Hard Graft

I've been bumping this mixtape from Chattabox & Samuel Otis for the last couple of weeks. This release is a follow up to the free mixtape Stupid O'Clock, that dropped just over a year ago.

As a duo, they bring a pretty unique sound, with Chattabox coming from the north east, and Otis from the south west. As virtually all the production is original, this is probably nearer an album than a mixtape, and barring a few misplaced features, it could pass for album quality as well. As with their work with Dialect & Lowercase, Chattabox & Otis always have some very catchy hooks, and melodic flows. At only 3 quid, this release is well worth your hard earned.

There should be more collaborations between artists from different sides of the country. The varied accents give the project a unique flavour, and help keep tracks interesting from one verse to the next.

Chattabox & Samuel Otis - Look Alive (Free download)

Here's the first single off an upcoming mixtape from North-East/South-West tag team Chattabox & Samuel Otis 'Hard Graft'. If their free mixtape from last year, 'Stupid O'Clock', is any indication, this should be well worth checking for.

'Music From The Tanhauser Gate' - Mr. Loop (free download)

More dopeness from Certified Banger favourite producer Mr. Loop featuring Yosh, Zoo Mark, Ben Black, Slippa, Rick Fury, Chattabox, Sam Otis, Super Dertie and others this free download really brings quality to your table. Mr. Loop is truly a perfectionist which is a great characteristic to have in this competitive scene. It's criminal that folks haven't heard of or heard the music of Mr. Loop. If you're one of those people, mug yourself no longer and download a copy of this and bump, bump, bump it.

'Suicide Clutch Rap' - Milestone (free download)

Ignore the weird and off putting name, get this on download and devote half an hour to checking this out. Milestone, aka Mylo from The Swamps, has gathered together a nice selection of producers and MCs to put together 'Suicide Clutch Rap'.

There are strong connections here with Geordie crew Dialect (and if you checked their 'D.Day' set then you'll want to hear this) with Peta Max and Chattabox both mucking in. Mylo also brings Sam Otis of Bristol crew Lowercase (and also of The Swamps with Chattabox and Mylo) and a whole host of other blokes including Bristol rappers B'Tol and Chalk MC on the raps and Shanksy, Joey Blitz, Rola, Mr. Monk (of Fat Club), Herboy and Flipz on the boards.

Anyway, the beats will keep your cranium violently bobbing and the raps will make you wonder who wronged these guys and which mental disease has them in its steely grasp - great stuff, if you like that kind of thing!

'D.Day' - Dialect (album review)

Being from the North East isn’t Dialect’s weak point, nor is it their gimmick – it’s what makes this album so refreshing. Their place of birth has driven them to create one of the most compelling Hip Hop albums I’ve listened to in a while. There’s none of the usual slang or superiority complex that make many other UK releases a little tedious. There are only brutally honest accounts of their real life. This album should definitely not be dismissed by non-locals.

This is one of those albums with which you can kick back with in order to really listen to it. There are autobiographical tracks in the form of the funky ‘Won’t Stop’, the slow burning ‘Quicksand’ and ‘I Woz ‘Ere’. There are anthems like Hip Hop versions of Kaiser Cheifs songs in the form of ‘The Landing’ and ‘Put It Down’ (just one of the tracks on which they really pull off the reggae ting). There are top quality collaborations such as ‘North and South’ with Ed Strong (of I.R.S.) and Mic Assassin, ‘Cerberus’ with Vast Aire, ‘War Games’ with fellow North Easters Text Offenders and ‘Grand Slam’ with Copywrite and Ru’ral – all of which have their own unique sound and style.

Production is mainly done in house by Peta Max although Chattabox contributes the instrumental for ‘I Woz ‘Ere’ and Sermstyle supplies beats on ‘No Guts No Glory’. The overall outlook of this album is a very positive one, certainly the music gives that feel even when the lyrics turn to the old Newcy Broon induced fighting talk or the back story of Rick Fury’s life. Check the secret track for beautiful production and a lovely guitar solo.

Despite being 17 tracks long and weighing in at 1.3 hours (whatever that means, thanks itunes for using unconventional units of time) this album is full of quality music, not just the same old, same old. It’s out soon on 1984 records, check back here for more details on its release date – it should do better than Sep's beloved team are doing right now.

On The Radar Artist Profile: Chattabox & Lowercase

Name: Chattabox & Lowercase

Age: 23

From: North East and South West

Track on ‘On The Radar’: 'The Rugged Brothers'

Tell us the story behind the track: Me and Otis from Lowercase wanted to make an absolute pig ignorant battle track. I met Otis and Sober at a gig in Bristol, I like the idea of a monster mash of regional accents so we formed like Voltron to create ‘The Rugged Brothers’ a 2 headed arrogant s**t bag fuelled with piss and cider. After the track was completed we did enjoy a lovely tea and a bourbon to celebrate our success.

Record Label: The Swamps

Who you roll with: Chattabox of the North East crew Dialect, Samuel Otis of the South West crew Lowercase, Sober of Sober & Dribbla, Milestone of The Cohorts, Mr Monk of Fat Club and DJ Rogue - together we're collectively known as ‘The Swamps'.

Favourite album(s): Dain't have one.

Describe your style in three words: mint, belters, cushty

Past/Present/Future projects: The Swamps have an album coming out later in the year called ‘Hard Graft’ featuring some all-star guest from all different parts of the country. Expect sick flows and regional accents! Lowercase are also working on their album, and Dialect's album 'D.Day' will be dropping in March and it features Vast Aire, Copywrite, D Strong of The IRS, Mic Assassin and more…
