'Memories' ft. Jehst - Joker Starr (free download)

'On The Radar' featured artist Joker Starr is preparing to drop his latest release; the 'Northborough Estate Project'. Now this is a guy who produced a track on Ty's mercury nominated album 'Upwards', has performed in New York as part of Jonzi D's Lyrical Feater and has collaborated with the likes of Estelle.

'Northborough Estate Project', if the tracks he's been dropping on mp3 via the web are anything to go by, is going to be big. The latest track would suggest so too:

Look out for this on May 25th when it will be released and will be available from all the leading download stores.

UK Artists in MOBO Awards Tonight

It's the MOBO awards tonight.

Sway, Wiley and Dizzee Rascal will battle it out for Best UK Male as well as a couple of others who I don't care for.

Estelle is going for Best UK Female against again, a few others who don't deserve to win. She's also up for a whole host of other awards; Best Song, Best Video and Best Album.

Ironik is up for Best UK Newcomer, he'd better not win that, Chipmunk or Skepta deserve it more.

We're (the UK) also reppin' in the Best Gospel category with Jahaziel and GreenJade both in the running and both thouroughly recommended by myself to any Hip Hop fans out there.

Best Song section features Wiley's 'Wearin' My Rolex', Dizzee's 'Dance Wiv Me' and Estelle's 'American Boy'. 'American Boy' is up for Best Video award as is Bashy's 'Kidulthood to Adulthood' and Tinchy Stryder's 'Stryderman'.

Dizzee and Wiley have both been nominated for Best Hip Hop alongside Jay-Z, Lupe Fiasco and Lil' Wayne.

Big ups also go to our own radio and club DJ's Semtex, Westwood, 279 and more.

How Old Is Estelle?

For all the strange people who type 'How old is Estelle?' into google (happy 10th birthday), here's your answer:

Estelle was born in 1980 (as suggested in her song '1980') on January 18th. This makes her 28 doesn't it?

But seriously, why do people want to know that? Are you thinking of asking her out and just checking to see if she's too old for you or not?

‘Speaking From Xperience’ - Blak Twang (album review)

Twang’s back again (‘…Although I never left, I’m takin’ my seat back//Back with a spring in my step, back in my element…’) with his fourth album release, fifth if you count the never-released-due-to-label-problems, promo only ‘Dettwork SouthEast’. ‘Speaking From Xperience’ is an aptly named volume of work, and a hefty tome at that. Frankly, I recoil at the thought of reviewing an album with 18 tracks proper (24 counting skits). How can I possibly listen to that much music and assess it all at once? ‘Tis pretty hard, but I’ve started now haven’t I?

As usual Mr. Rotton touches on a variety of issues but this time round to accompany and complement this, he utilises a range of ‘urban’ sounds. ‘Hey People’ sits in the grime domain, however ‘Made Me Strong’ crosses over into dancehall territory. ‘So Hard’ displays soul influences but showcases a double time flow and ‘There For You’ has an eastern feel but is clearly influenced by modern R’n’B. The resulting overall sound is a cleverly blended version of all that’s hot right now in the sphere of ‘black music’ on both sides of the pond. Nevertheless, Twang’s recognisable production sound is still evident. This clever move should afford Tony a good few new listeners to add to his ever loyal fan base.

If you’re into UK Hip Hop you’ll know Blak Twang’s name is huge. You’ll also probably know the names Sway and Estelle. Man, who doesn’t know Estelle’s name? Sway’s pretty huge too. Both artists pop up on ‘SFX’ adding to the value and appeal of this release. Sway features on ‘Legends’ on which both exercise their rapid fire raps. To be honest, neither MC’s are at their best here; Twang has difficulty spitting some lyrics and Sway is just not as entertaining and humorous as usual. Love story ‘Nu N’uh’ features Tor as well as Estelle. Tor provides the voice of the other half whilst Estelle offers a mournful chorus. Other similarly themed tracks (Sway’s ‘F Ur X’, Dizzee’s ‘I Luv U’, The Street’s ‘Get Out Of My House’) have succeeded where ultimately this one bores a bit. Neither of these tracks are bad, they just could have been better with the talent involved. For a better, nay, brilliant Twang/Estelle collabo, check ‘Trixstar’ on the album ‘Kik Off’.

But it’s far from bad. The single ‘Champagne Lifestyle’ is cool as is it’s flip ‘4 Tha Summa’ (maybe next year eh?!) but I’ve already reviewed that (click the link). The first single ‘Help Dem Lord’, released on 12” last year is awesome and in the vein of ‘So Rotton’, it’s a track I don’t tire of. ‘‘96’ is a belting 3 verse autobiography, modestly reserved for last track. ‘We Gonna Win’, the opener is a dramatic and weighty statement of intent – check for the amazing flute riff. ‘Nah I Aint Done’ with Sheriff and K9 and ‘Rap Life’ are just great Hip Hop songs and a testament to the diversity of our genre. Rhymefest appears on ‘Tale of 2 Cityz’ a jumbled but bubbly production that should stimulate at least a couple of neck muscles. Without mentioning each track, be assured that the rest of the album is solid stuff.

The addition of this album to his back catalogue should see Blak Twang’s name remain in the arena for a good while – the man deserves all the success in the world. He’s been consistent, interesting and wise and is a true pioneer. Here’s to another hour and a bit of Tony Olabode’s music that will provide many hours more entertainment.

The single ‘Champagne Lifestyle’ is available now and ‘Speaking From Xperience’ will be out on September 15th on the Abstract Urban label and will probably be available absolutely everywhere that’s worth shopping at.

Save Target As

It's about time that I bless with you with some actual music, I know I can't expect you to just read about music and watch videos with music on them. To get the balance I'll not write very much today.

First some heat from Seattle: 'Tobacco Road' by Common Market is a beautifully chilled southern country baptist gospel type track seemingly based alot on farming. This theme continues, apparently, throughout the album - one I'm really looking forward to.

End of the Weak is a British MC battle competition and a load of it's partakers (Reain, Stig of the Dump, Dr Syntax, SonnyJim, Jazz T) got together over some Chemo production to create this banger: 'End of the Weak'.

Estelle had a life before she met Kanye and Will.I.Am and a rich and fruitful life it was. Here is an early demo/promo that is funkybanginghard - 'Ahead of my Flow'. Thanks to Disorda at Suspect Packages for that.

Lupe Fiasco and A-Trak have made this cool tune and it's something to do with Nike: 'Running Man'.

Naughty by Nature are back with a little remake of The Game's 'Game's Pain'. It's called 'Hip Hop's Pain' and is all about how they respect the new wave of artists.

Leeds lad Breaking the Illusion (BTI for short) has remixed fellow Leeds lad's The Hair's track 'Half Cut'. That type of British Indie music isn't really my bag and the remix just makes it a bit more electronic and glitchy but BTI's lyrics on the last verse are worth hearing.

Finally, this track by Tobias: 'Bumper 2 Bumper'. It basically sounds nice so it's here. I think it's about rush hour traffic.

Kasha remixes Estelle

You should hear Kasha. If not only for his brilliant remake/remix of Estelle's 'American Boy' which is entitled 'American Girl'. He takes off Kanye's lazy slurring brilliantly (uh-ohh that was lazy -x2 brilliants, ah well) but adds his own precise delivery to the mix.

He also has an EP in the pipelines called 'Wildheart' and you can hear the title track of this here. He's also done a track inspired by Rick Ross' 'Hustling' also called 'Hustling' (that's the second take off of that I've featured this week). The boy's got skills for real so dip your toes.

He's also just recorded a track named 'You Have A Choice' as a theme song for an upcoming, anti-knives-on-streets event held at the Emirates Stadium. This is an issue I have some views on so expect a post soon about the UK media's latest pet topic - knife crime. I can't say too much right now but the point is, the government are getting it all wrong - no surprises there for some people but I am not usually of that opinion!

We got it for Cheap - 'Lowlife is 40' & 'UK Takeover Vol. 4'

There's a bit of a Braintax track (possibly 'Monsoon Funk' off 'Panorama') where he says something about how he's mixed down half the UK classics. Well, it's true, it may be a slight underestimation when considering UK Hip Hop from at least the last 10 years.

This CD, that you can get for a ridiculously low price (59p, anyone?!) here on the wonderful Amazon marketplace features some great tracks from Braintax, Task Force, Jehst, Rodney P, Mystro, Asaviour, Kashmere, Skinnyman, Verb T and Lewis Parker. It was created to celebrate the 40th Lowlife release and it really helps to prove Joey's point although it's not an exhaustive list and there are plenty more classics where these came from. It also features what is becoming UK industry standard for packaging: Classy gatefold style cardboard, and that makes it nicer to own, OK not so good for keeping in the car if you want it to stay nice!

Whoever you are, where ever you're at, just get yourself a copy of this and enjoy. I've already copped 3 for me and my bro and my mate.

You wouldn't go far wrong either by ordering this: UK Takeover Volume 4, the soundtrack to the night. It's packed with classics ('Survival of the Hardest Working' by Blade), some personal favourites of mine (Baby J's 'Let it Go remix' and 'So You Want More' by Ty and Roots Manuva')and other tracks by great UK MC's (Yungun, Estelle etc) . You can pick this up for around the 50p mark too, awesome!

Have you heard? Old Estelle

With Estelle's 'American Boy' at number one on the itunes download chart and with goodness only knows how many radio stations playing it every hour I thought I'd better just dig back a few tracks and make sure peeps know where she's come from.

Estelle worked with UK group 57th Dynasty (Whose name apparently inspired Jay-Z to name the Roc La Familia album 'The Dynasty' after a meeting with them). On 'Break Free' Estelle sings "Well we're moving along in our lifetimes//From the good to the bad..." and she certainly has moved along.

She featured on 'Countryman', the classic UK album by Skitz on female posse cut 'Domestic Science' alongside Wildflower, Tempa and Harry Love. Unsurprisingly, this isn't a tune about how women should do chores around the house.

Her first solo album '18th Day' contained the brilliantly uplifting rap track '1980'; Estelle's reminiscatory tune.

She spits fire (Yes, Estelle is a rapper) AND sings sweet harmonies on her track 'Too Long' on 'The National Anthem Mixtape' from the 'UK Runnings' series - check 10Shott get his name in on the end of this!

Last year she featured on Hi-Tek's latest offering (imaginatively entitled 'Hi-Teknology 3) on the chilled out 'Life To Me'.

And now here she is making huge moves with Kanye and Will.i.am; pop's two biggest Hip Hop imports at the moment - 'American Boy'.

Download all tracks, plus 2 more here, brought to you in association with Zshare!

and here's Mr Gaspar's electro pumping remix
