Cyrus Malachi - Animal Circus (video)

Cyrus Malachi has been pretty prolific in releasing videos to support Ancient Future, which dropped a couple of weeks ago. This vid for Animal Circus is already the third that he has brought us. In this track he breaks down the history of hip-hop as he sees it, and details some of his early influences from the UK. Fascinating stuff, laid down over some moody keys and thumping drums courtesy of Jon Phonics. This is the type of stuff I think Phonics is best at, and whilst you'd never want an artist to pidgeonhole themselves, I occasionally get the feeling that Jon Phonics tries a little too hard to seem like an eclectic 21st century producer rather than sticking to what is clearly a strength.

Cyrus Malachi - Hell's Garrison feat. M9 (video)

Here's a second video from Cyrus Malachi's Ancient Future album. This track sees him and frequent tag-team partner M9 drop trademark dark social commentary over eerie, atmospheric production from Nottingham's Endemic. The low budget black & white vid sits pretty well with this vibe. I believe the album is released on monday. Go Cop.

Cyrus Malachi - Ancient Future (Review)

If you've ever heard any project that Cyrus Malachi has been involved in previously, then you already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Ancient Future. These expectations will be lived up to immediately by the opening track, Dark Skies. Over pounding drums and atmospheric keys, Cyrus and long time collaborator M9 deliver typically gritty bars, kicking the album off in fine style.

However, after this same vibe is persisted with, to diminishing impact over the next couple of tracks, you could be forgiven for thinking that this album was going to add little to what you've already heard from Triple Darkness, Orphans of Cush or even M9. But you'd be wrong. As befitting a debut solo album, Cyrus Malachi uses the opportunity to create some more personal tracks, providing much needed variety in topic and tone. One example of this would be Duality, a love song, whose lyrics might seem corny in other hands. However, with his raspy delivery, and the typically solid production, it works a treat:

"As time passes, we grow closer,
Let's take a ride on life's roller coaster,
And experience it as two halves of one whole,
You're my light, I'm your dark, we share one soul"

Personal experience is also tapped into on Kemetic Love, as he discusses his family and the exceptional Black Maria, an emotive description of his trial and incarceration. The Anatomy produced track is a clear album highlight, with arguably Cyrus' strongest lyrical performance to date:

"Goons getting battered with washsocks filled with batteries,
Blood staines on the pool table - unadulterated savagery,
Her Majesty's rhapsody, brothers getting shanked and left in agony,
Screws call the cleaners, who freeze dry the blood and sweep it up casually,
Fights breaking out sporadically, tension because no one's seen their family"

The emotion poured into this song is evident in the delivery, as he wraps up the track by saying "I'm never going back again". Other notable tracks include Brave New World, which paints a hellish picture of the future, the "Black Girl Lost" style cautionary tale of Black Maria, and Cyrus Malachi's version of the history of Hip-Hop "Animal Circus"

Are there any negatives then? Only that at 20 tracks long, it could maybe be a little more streamlined. In my opinion, the tracks which could have been left out were the US collaborations, although not necessarily because they are weak tracks, far from it in a couple of cases. Strangely, Cyrus Malachi always takes the last verse on these tracks, making him seem like an afterthought on his own album. On top of that, a few of the guest verses, notably Ruste Juxx's attack on "Ugg mug bitches", seem incongruous with the prevailing mood. That said, this album hits far more frequently than it misses, with heartfelt lyrics, and extremely solid, usually piano dominated, production.

8.5/10

Cyrus Malachi - Native Son (video) & The Isis Papers 2 (free download)

Here's the first video from Cyrus Malachi's Ancient Future album that will drop on the 11th of April. If you've ever seen anything from Cyrus, Triple Darkness, M9, Orphans of Cush, etc previously, then you know full well what to expect. Black and white vid, thumping drums, and dark tales of society's ills. The album, by the way, is excellent, and is comfortably to best material that Cyrus Malachi has been involved with to date, so cop that when it drops. Full review soon come...

On top of this, he has dropped part 2 of his Isis Papers mixtape, to build anticipation for the album. I haven't checked this volume out yet, but I'm sure it'll be worth a listen, because:

1. Part 1 was decent,
2. The album is excellent,
3. It's free,

Cyrus Malachi Interview

I recently had the chance to catch up with Cyrus Malachi and heres what he had to say.

CB: Thanks for taking the time to sit down with Certified Banger, can you fill in those who may not be aware of you with some history?

CYRUS MALACHI: yeah man no doubt, i first was heard on m9's debut mixape ''High Fidelity'' which dropped in 2007, i then was introduced further to the game with the Triple darkness debut album''Anathema'' which dropped in 2008, later that year i was heard on numerous cameos off the M9 sophomore mixtape/project 144,000, the following year in 2009 i was part of a group some were deeming a supergroup Orphans of Cush, we dropped a mixtape ''White Noize'', then in july 2010 i dropped my first solo mixtape ''The Isis Papers'' vol 1, which will be followed up by a Vol 2 in March 2011, then the following month my solo debut L.P ''Ancient Future'' will drop 11th April...

CB: The new album "Ancient Future" is out on April 11th how does this differ to your previous work and who have you lined up for production and features?
CYRUS MALACHI: It fundamentally differs firstly because its the first album ive ever done solo, so people are gonna get to know more about me as an artist, also i touch on some very personal life experiances, a side no one has seen much of, it is insanely lyrical, ridiculously concentrate hip hop steeped in symbollism, positive thought, knowledge and wisdom, the horrors of street life but at other times
its simple, clear, relatable, understandable, emotive and powerfully moving...feature wise there is a strong American Prescence on the album, something i know some over patriotic fans might not like, but i dont share the belief of fuck the yanks, i wave the uk hip hop flag all day, coz thats how i came up, but the world is much bigger than this island and we have to realise that, and above all America gave birth to this music we love so working with the finest emcees from over there is an honour regardless of what some people may say, and as well as that i have a least 10 tracks on my album which only feature myself so i dont think anyone will be able to say i couldnt hold it down solo, i got The Wisemen on there a siick detroit based Wu Tang branch off group led by the lyrical and production mystro Bronze Nazereth, i got one of hottest rappers on the US underground Ruste Juxx reppin Duck Down records, the Wu Elements producer and Emcee Darkim Be Allah and the late great Killa Sha R.I.P which was a special honour coz i grew up listening to that guy , man....UK got Kyza Smirnoff, Melanin 9, Iron Braydz, Cipher jewels, also got a hot US female vocalist on there by the name of Letia La'rock....beats, Beat Butcha, 7th Dan, Diplimat, Anatomy, Noize Theivery, Endemic, Jon Phonics and Morph.

CB: You and No Cure Records in general have been making a lot of moves in America lately, considering most artists this side of the Atlantic struggle to make an impact there what do you think has been key to this success?

CYRUS MALACHI: I think the key is its real hip hop first of all, people recognize real shit wherever you are, also i rap about the street instead of glorifying it, i show the horrors of it and brothas can relate to that, people say i have a deep baritone vocal which has quite a lot of force to it, i came through the same mystery schools of thought a lotta American rappers have, and i make very traditional hip hop not anything derrivitive like some weird funky house electro shit with bars put on top of it just good pure hip hop, and one more major factor is the very astute work of No cure Records owned by Endemic, who has the business acumen, drive, passion, connects and networking skills to make big things happen for his artists.

CB: Is there any plans for a tour to coincide with the release?

CYRUS MALACHI: Not as of yet, but i would love to tour man especially for this album..

CB: Okay youve worked with some great artists,is there anyone you would like to work with in the future?
CYRUS MALACHI: For sure man, erm, Raekwon, Roc Marciano, Sean Price, REKS, Slaughterhouse, Vinnie Paz, Rass Kass, Shabazz the disciple, Killah Priest, GZA, RZA, Tragedy Khadafi, Black Milk, Apollo Brown, Black the Ripper, Klashnekoff,Phi Life Cypher, Chester P, the P Brothers and he legendary Hackney based Uk crew 12 Stone, to name a few

CB: So whats next for Cyrus Malachi?

CYRUS MALACHI: What ever the universe throws a me bro, all i know is in the last few months iv had some shit happen to me that made me realise I was born to do this, i truly believe that.

CB: Is there anything youd like to add?

CYRUS MALACHI: nothing much, just KEEP HIP HOP ALIVE...

'Cuttin' It Fine' - DJ Roast (review)

Hip Hop with scratching? Yes please. Not only does DJ Roast get down behind the boards on ‘Cuttin’ It Fine’, he also gets loose on the cuts – something we should hear more of on UK releases. Roast’s production is in the classic sampled loop-based dust-fest vein with added grit and East Coast style funk. There isn’t a bad beat on here – all of them hit hard.

With a supporting cast of rappers Teef, Nemesis & Arrogance, Triggs Vega, Phoenix da Icefire, Cyrus Malachi, Genesis Ellijah, Stig & Syntax, Skandal, Brad Strut and Ramson Badbonez most UK Hip Hop fans will know what to expect from this line up of new school (but old school influenced) MCs.

Teef’s contributions really stand out – this guy is a really entertaining spitter with unconventional flows and a whole load of witticisms – check ‘News Flash’ and ‘Paper Mache’ for his solo tracks. ‘Vagina Monologue Two’ featuring Cyrus Malachi and D21 gets the skip button from me – I just don’t want to hear details of another guy’s sexual exploits. Surprisingly, I can’t really get with Stig and Syntax’s ‘Wasters Inc’ – maybe ‘cause I just can’t relate to what they’re saying (even if it is slightly tongue in cheek?) – some of you will be able to so it’ll probably become your anthem. ‘Trading Darts’ (also featuring Cyrus) sounds as fresh as it did on ‘On The Radar Vol. 5’ where it was debuted and tracks like ‘Ghostown’ and ‘2012’ provide social commentary. ‘Playtime’s Over’ is a intimidating and broody triple threat from Skandal, Brad Strut and Ramson Badbonez.

‘Cuttin’ It Fine’ is must-have for UK Hip Hop heads who are already fans of the guest MCs. It’s available now from Suspect Packages for only £4.99. Go to the amazing Bandcamp website now to hear the whole thing!
