Cyrus Malachi Interview

I recently had the chance to catch up with Cyrus Malachi and heres what he had to say.

CB: Thanks for taking the time to sit down with Certified Banger, can you fill in those who may not be aware of you with some history?

CYRUS MALACHI: yeah man no doubt, i first was heard on m9's debut mixape ''High Fidelity'' which dropped in 2007, i then was introduced further to the game with the Triple darkness debut album''Anathema'' which dropped in 2008, later that year i was heard on numerous cameos off the M9 sophomore mixtape/project 144,000, the following year in 2009 i was part of a group some were deeming a supergroup Orphans of Cush, we dropped a mixtape ''White Noize'', then in july 2010 i dropped my first solo mixtape ''The Isis Papers'' vol 1, which will be followed up by a Vol 2 in March 2011, then the following month my solo debut L.P ''Ancient Future'' will drop 11th April...

CB: The new album "Ancient Future" is out on April 11th how does this differ to your previous work and who have you lined up for production and features?
CYRUS MALACHI: It fundamentally differs firstly because its the first album ive ever done solo, so people are gonna get to know more about me as an artist, also i touch on some very personal life experiances, a side no one has seen much of, it is insanely lyrical,ridiculously concentrate hip hop steeped in symbollism, positive thought, knowledge and wisdom, the horrors of street life but at other times
its simple,clear,relatable,understandable, emotive and powerfully moving...feature wise there is a strong American Prescence on the album, something i know some over patriotic fans might not like, but i dont share the belief of fuck the yanks, i wave the uk hip hop flag all day, coz thats how i came up, but the world is much bigger than this island and we have to realise that, and above all America gave birth to this music we love so working with the finest emcees from over there is an honour regardless of what some people may say, and as well as that i have a least 10 tracks on my album which only feature myself so i dont think anyone will be able to say i couldnt hold it down solo, i got The Wisemen on there a siick detroit based Wu Tang branch off group led by the lyrical and production mystro Bronze Nazereth, i got one of hottest rappers on the US underground Ruste Juxx reppin Duck Down records, the Wu Elements producer and Emcee Darkim Be Allah and the late great Killa Sha R.I.P which was a special honour coz i grew up listening to that guy , man....UK got Kyza Smirnoff, Melanin 9, Iron Braydz, Cipher jewels, also got a hot US female vocalist on there by the name of Letia La'rock....beats, Beat Butcha, 7th Dan, Diplimat, Anatomy, Noize Theivery, Endemic, Jon Phonics and Morph.

CB: You and No Cure Records in general have been making a lot of moves in America lately, considering most artists this side of the Atlantic struggle to make an impact there what do you think has been key to this success?

CYRUS MALACHI: I think the key is its real hip hop first of all, people recognize real shit wherever you are, also i rap about the street instead of glorifying it, i show the horrors of it and brothas can relate to that, people say i have a deep baritone vocal which has quite a lot of force to it, i came through the same mystery schools of thought a lotta American rappers have, and i make very traditional hip hop not anything derrivitive like some weird funky house electro shit with bars put on top of it just good pure hip hop, and one more major factor is the very astute work of No cure Records owned by Endemic, who has the business acumen,drive, passion,connects and networking skills to make big things happen for his artists.

CB: Is there any plans for a tour to coincide with the release?

CYRUS MALACHI: Not as of yet, but i would love to tour man especially for this album..

CB: Okay youve worked with some great artists,is there anyone you would like to work with in the future?
CYRUS MALACHI: For sure man, erm, Raekwon, Roc Marciano, Sean Price, REKS, Slaughterhouse, Vinnie Paz, Rass Kass, Shabazz the disciple, Killah Priest, GZA, RZA, Tragedy Khadafi, Black Milk, Apollo Brown, Black the Ripper, Klashnekoff,Phi Life Cypher, Chester P, the P Brothers and he legendary Hackney based Uk crew 12 Stone, to name a few

CB: So whats next for Cyrus Malachi?

CYRUS MALACHI: What ever the universe throws a me bro, all i know is in the last few months iv had some shit happen to me that made me realise I was born to do this, i truly believe that.

CB: Is there anything youd like to add?

CYRUS MALACHI: nothing much, just KEEP HIP HOP ALIVE...

'Needle Drop' - Endemic & Cappo (EP review)

Most hardcorest producer from the UK – probably Endemic. One of the UK’s most legendary but underrated MCs – definitely Cappo. They’ve got together to create the ‘Needle Drop EP’ on No Cure Records.

Cappo goes solo over Endemics gritty, orchestral, solid and sometimes soulful boom bap beats on 3 tracks – ‘Intro’, ‘Crumbs’ and the title track. With strictly lyrical raps Cappo proves that going in hard doesn’t mean being offensive.

‘Hacksaw’ features Cyrus Malachi, Lee Ramsey and Ironbraydz – this comes off very much like a Triple Darkness track. Cyrus Malachi also features alongside another legendary Notts MC and man of the moment Scorzayzee on ‘Eagles’ – a concrete slab of Hip Hop.

'Theolovision' - Sleaze (album review)

Sleaze aka Hermes Trismegistus (Who? Whut?!) can be easily contrasted with Nas: whereas Nas notoriously picks bad beats, Sleaze has picked a set of bangers on this, his ‘Theolovision’ long player. Ghost, Beat Butcha, Wizard, Endemic, Reklews, Hey!Zeus, Madskillz and Skank all pitch in with awesomely heavy beats – this LP’s strong point.

Sleaze, a Bromwich boy transplanted to the south, retains his accent as he raps frenetically on tracks such as ‘Wild Sumerian’ and ‘Bembine Triad’ – which frankly, aren’t as deep and thinky as I think Sleaze would like them to be. Mr. Trismegistus does stand out from the pack but mainly because of the fact that his rap style will not be to most people’s taste - something he's aware of as the press release states "13 tracks of how Hip Hop should not be flavour of the week". ‘Theolovision’ claims to be the brainchild of a theologist and historian amongst other things – I’d like to see those influences shine brighter, I’d like some real light bulb moments and I’d like some more insightful lyrics.

Sleaze has reeled in a list of likeminded MCs such as Ruffstylz, Lee Scott, Gramma Marksman, Super Dertie to vibe alongside this likeable but hard-to-swallow MC (No homo!). Stand out tracks are ‘Wild Sumerian’ featuring T-Bone and Illmystic and ‘Success (Worked My Whole Life For This)’.

‘Theolovision’ is out now and available at Suspect Packages and who knows, you might really feel this.

3 Free Endemic Tracks

Endemic, the Nottingham producer whose album 'Terminal Illness' is currently being well recieved by fans of the featured MCs over the pond, has let a few bits and pieces go free:

'I'm Show You' features the oh-so-gully Sean Price and Ruste Juxx and it's a track from the album.

'Can't Stand To Wake Up' is also on the album but here's a free remix by Kevlaar 7.

'One Day' is another remix of an album cut which features Killah Priest, Timbo King and King David on spits. This time it's Endemic who's done the remix.

'Terminal Illness' - Endemic (album review)

UK producer links up with US rappers - a format seldom practiced but one that has a deep history of producing some quality Hip Hop (insert own example here). Endemic has followed the recipe closely and as a result his ‘Terminal Illness’ set is a collection of tracks bound to appeal to Hip Hop fans worldwide.

12” single track ‘Robin Hood Theory’ features Timbo King and Planet Asia is the album opener proper and ‘Comin To Kill’ featuring Sean Price, Rusty Juxx (who both appear later) & Sav Killz, the 12” flipside, comes in at track number 4. Wu affiliates Hell Razah and Killah Priest pop up on ‘Three Kings’ and ‘One Day’ respectively. Homegrown talent comes in the form of M9, Cyrus Malachi and Nasheron of Triple Darkness and C Mone, most famous for her appearance on The Streets album ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’.

But this being a producer album, I have to focus on the beats - the bread to the MCs' butter. The instrumentals are straight up classic boom-bap type productions that sample soulful breaks with weighty effect. With a sound that has come to represent the east coast streets Endemic has created a very consistent set which will only occupy 47 minutes of your time, ensuring an all the way through listen is possible.

On his next outing Endemic will benefit from MCs who take his work and run with it to create something beyond the ordinary (in the way that female MC Sima Lee does with the upbeat ‘Look My Way’) – some of the tracks here can sound a little samey. But if it’s good, solid rap music you want, Endemic got it and you wouldn’t be going far wrong by snapping up a copy of this LP.

Endemic's 'Terminal Illness' is out officially on March 23rd on No Cure Records in the UK and on EMI records in the US.
