Sonnyjim - Tall Poppy Syndrome (video)

Is Sonnyjim the UK's hardest working? I know I've given that title to Verb T in the past, but Jim is pretty relentless with his releases these days... Fresh on the heels of The Psychonaut remix project is the Tall Poppy Syndrome EP, which drops on the 25/11. Here is a video to the title track from that release. It's on a zoned out vibe, with a slurrier delivery than you'd usually hear from Jim, but as ever, his verses are always worth at least a couple of spins.

"Rappers nowadays? No penmanship. You liked how I kept it real? Don't mention it."

P.L.O, Sonnyjim & Mudmowth -Heat (video)

Half a vid here for the Sonnyjim and Mudmowth track that was posted a couple of days ago. I say half a vid, as it's only the Eat Good half of the EG/Associated Minds collabo that is present.

As I mentioned a few days back, this track is taken from a collaborative EP that the 2 labels have put together. The Highball EP, which is "coming soon"...

Monday, 11 April 2011

As you may well be aware already, Eat Good records, and Associated Minds are teaming up to release an EP featuring virtually the whole roster of each of the two labels.

This is the lead track from the Highball EP, featuring Eat Good frontman Sonnyjim, and AM's Mudmowth, fresh from the release of his excellent Sledgehammer Kisses set with Metabeats. The heavyweight production comes courtesy of P.L.O. If this is any indication, the Highball EP is definitely one to look out for...

Sleaze & Sonny Jim - The Long Road (Video) & The Late Checkout Mixtape

Surely one of the country's hardest working, Sonnyjim returns with yet another video... This is a soulful laidback track that will feature on Sleaze and Sonny's Work In Mnemonics EP, which is "coming soon"...

If that's not enough, Donnie Propa has put together a 43 minute Sonnyjim mix, similar to the tapes he put together for Lee Ramsey and Cappo recently. You'll be sure to recognise some of the tracks, but probably not all...

And finally... If you haven't checkout out the Purple Patch EP yet, do so...

Sonny Jim - The Purple Patch (Part 4) & The Purple Patch EP

Sonny Jim drops the final instalment of his Purple Patch series. You should know the deal by now, no hook straight rhyming. This time Jim goes in over Apatight's headnodder for 4 and a half minutes.

All 4 parts are now available to download from Jim's bandcamp page. Slightly pointlessly, the release contains dirty and clean versions of the 4 tracks. I'd thought that the instrumentals were going to be included, but apparently not... Anyway, this is dope, several hundered bars (probably), 4 banging beats, go cop...

Sonnyjim - Nimbus (video)

The prolific Sonnyjim drops yet another new video. Apparently this one is off an EP with regular collaborator Kelakovski. I'm starting to lose track of Sonny's 'coming soon' list...

Sonnyjim - Purple Patch 3 (Video & Free Download)

Another new vid from Birmingham's Sonnyjim, this time for the third part of his Purple Patch series, produced by acclaimed US beatsmith Illmind. The concept on part 3 is the same as the previous 2, no hook, no messing about, juts Jim laying down the bars.

If you're feeling the joint, download for free here:

Apparently, this is going to be shortly followed by the Purple Patch EP, which will include part 4 as well as the three previously released instalments, and all the instrumentals.

Sonnyjim & Kosyne - EG Professionals (Video)

Sonnyjim & Kosyne bring a video for the Kelakovski produced track EG Professionals, which is one of the standouts from the Birmingham label Eat Good Reocrd's compilation album that dropped earlier in the year. A hard working label, expect to hear plenty more from them in 2011.

'Trading Standards Remixes' - SonnyJim (review)

Is this SonnyJim's best release to date? Somewhere between maybe and probably. 'Trading Standards Remixes' is a choice selection of 10 tracks from more than twice that amount of tracks originally on the mixtape, and that's with two new tracks which aren't remixes. Listening to this you get the impression that this is no afterthought, rather the mixtape was the taster and this is the actual album.

10 tracks is a good thing in my books, not too long, not too short and with the variety on offer here there is no chance of boredom whatsoever. With sounds ranging from Lotek's Reggae remix of 'Mission Statement' to Kelakovski's signature sound gracing his version of 'Dynamite' featuring Verb T and Metropolis to the stripped down but straight up Hip Hop of Sivey's remix for 'Next Generation (love that bass!) this truly is a remix album, not just a load of acapellas over beats that sound the same as the originals. Shears brings the muddy and lethargic funk on opener 'Triumph of the Little Guy' and M-Phazes provides his big sound the the huge line up of Jehst, Cappo and SonnyJim on 'God Complex. Jon Phonics is as moody as ever with his hybrid of real instrumentation and synths on 'On All Cylinders' and Kelakovski takes a different direction with 'Stack Ps' - I'd say it's closely akin to Dubstep. Musn't forget Kosyne's feel good vibes on 'Running Late' on which The I.R.S and Sonny really smash it.

The new tracks are 'Just Spit' featuring Unfriendly Neighbours with punchy production from Wizard and 'Dunbar's Number' produced by 184.

'Trading Standards Remixes' is available from all over including Play.com, Tesco, Amazon and itunes as a digital download but the CD can be bought for a mere £5 from the Eat Good Records website.

According to the press blurb 'this is the first in a slew of SonnyJim releases set to drop this year. Be on the lookout for the 'Psychonaut' LP out on Australian label Obese Records in October 2010. Also SonnyJim/Sleaze EP 'Working Mnemonics' and SonnyJim/Apatight LP 'Magnum Opus' will be coming soon.'

'Half Past Calm 2' - Jon Phonics - Coming Soon!

Here's the blurb, no point in me re-hashing it (there usually is):

Jon Phonics' debut album for YNR Productions, Half Past Calm 2, will be available exclusively from Monday 3rd May via the brand new YNR Productions website. Produced entirely by Jon Phonics and featuring exclusive tracks with YNR artists Jehst, Kashmere, Verb T & Micall Parknsun, plus extended fam Melanin 9, Cyrus Malachi & Nasheron of Triple Darkness, Obba Supa, 9 Planets, SonnyJim, Kosyne, Ramson Badbonez, T-Bear, Fliptrix & More.

The album will be available in a limited edition run of 300 x hand printed 4-ply fold out covers, screen printed by Brixton Basement Press (Some of the process can be seen in the video trailer below) and also a free download from the YNR website for a limited time only.

Take some time to check out this trailer an prepare yourself for what's to come from one of the countries illest producers doing it:

'The Landing' - Mr. Boss (free download)

Perfect production from Mr. Boss and a great guest list: SonnyJim, Skrein, Delusionists, Yosh and Dr. Syntax to name a few. At only 18 years old this guy has more than enough time to establish himself and if this is anything to go by it won't be long before every MC worth his salt will want a beat from Mr. Boss.

'The Landing' has been made available for free despite the fact that you should be paying for something this decent. Click here to download it.

Don't be tempted just to listen to the tracks that have the well known MCs on (although they are dope and SonnyJim kicks things off in style, no doubt). Tracks like 'Young and Foolish' by Them Lot and 'Understand' by Chango Flash are top notch. I'm definitely looking forward to hear more from all involved in this project.

Free Downloads from SonnyJim & Kelakovski, Genesis Elijah, Sam Khan, JPMD, Plan B, Deadly Hunta, DPF & Yogi

Keeping things going for 2010, on a quick tip thing:

Genesis Elijah - 'Power' (produced by Beezwax)
Taken from the forthcoming 'Civil Unrest' EP from Genesis Elijah and producer Beezwax. This is only gonna be free on Bandcamp for a limited time only so get over there now!

SonnyJim - 'The Purple Patch' (produced by Kelakovski)
Look out for more music coming soon from SonnyJim in 2010 with artists such as Illmind, Marco Polo, M-Phazes, Prince Po, AG and J-Zone. Also, SonnyJim's 'Trading Standards' remix project dropping in March 2010 with exclusive remixes by Lotek Hifi, Kosyne Jon Phonics and more.

Sam Kahn - 'Fall Back'
Modern sounding but I'm feeling the lyricism. Check the video too at youtube.

JPMD - 'So Hard'
This one is a new track fresh out of the cooker for 'Know What Time Rhyme 'N' Grind Vol 2'. It features Angry, Ramboss, Grievz and Big Dange. To find out more hit up these places: www.myspace.com/jahstproduction, www.myspace.com/darealrambossneckle and www.twitter.com/jpmd_uk.

Plan B - 'Welcome To Hell'
New direction for this lad, see what you think.

Chronic Redeye - 'Stand Up' ft. Deadly Hunta, DPF & Lyrical T
Taken from 'Ruffneck Intellect Volume One' - "a mixed CD that is set to drag listeners into a realm where no amount of ice or big rims can save the weak from getting crushed under the weight of some real skills. The criteria for the ‘Ruffneck Intellect’ mix series is simple; it’s got to bump hard for the sound systems and it’s got to have depth and lyrical content that goes beyond the standard ignorance that gets peddled by many major labels today. This is real music, this is Hip-Hop and this is something fresh!"

Yogi - 'Hidden Chapter'
Dope as usual Hip Hop from the Midlands.
