Genesis Elijah - Reign of Fire (video)

Another video here from Genesis Elijah. This is taken from his free EP 'I Ain't Even Charging Bruv', that dropped earlier this year (and can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?c6fff97bxacd5t5 )

I've always liked Genesis Elijah, and thought he was a bit slept on. Always seems to spit from the heart, and is pretty skilled with it as well. The free EP is not his best work, but is still worth a listen (being free and all that...).

Chapter And Verse - Stanza & Dead Man Walkn (Free Download)

Been meaning to post this for a while.
M.C. Stanza and producer Dead Man Walkn dropped this free download recentlyb and it doesnt disappoint from the opener "On My Way" with its heavy beat,Stanza shows her lyrical skill and proves she can spit as good if not better than anyone around and the song its self is a statement of intent.
Up next is "Still Hope" and this is a real summer time, playing footy in the park type song if you get me.
Every song is a banger though, not to mention the appearances of UK Heavyweights Genesis Elijah,Wordsmiff and Terra Slim.
"Battleground" featuring Words and Terra is another stand-out track on a project full of them.
Also Genesis Elijah goes in on his verse on "First Blood"
I think we will definetely be hearing a lot more from the 2 of these in the future and look forward to it.

Genesis Elijah - Battle Cry UK (Video)

Genesis Elijah brings a new video for his version of Joell Ortiz's Battle Cry. 100 angry, punchline-filled bars straight, no hook. He might not quite rip it to the level that Joell did, but this isn't a bad effort at all.

'The Enigma EP' - Capital R (review)

Searching for some Hip Hop that sounds something like it used to in this mire of mushy music? You might turn your ear to Capital R and his 'The Enigma EP' for half an hour.

The beats are all sample based and soulful and form a cohesive backdrop despite being produced by several different beatmakers. DJ 456's cuts are a welcome proof that Capital R is intent on respecting the art form. Capital R's flow and voice has an old school, simple feel to it and is certainly pretty unique in this saturated scene. His chatty style is easy to digest and never lacks in clarity. On 'You don't Own Me', in amongst his peers (who include Genesis Elijah and Mr. Flex) his voice is instantly recognisable.

Bonus track 'I Represent (For Hip Hop)' is an ode to the music that many of us know and love from our formative years.

The 8 tracks on offer here are enough to introduce a promising artist and his chosen compadres and 'The Enigma EP' can be downloaded at Bandcamp now.

'Life Music' - Grit Grammar (review)

Watch out for Grit Grammar's album 'Life Music' - it's a professionally finished and very solid selection of tracks from the MC and his go-to producer Baron Samedi.

Grit bucks all current radio fodder trends without just sounding like another UK MC with another UK Hip Hop album - this LP has memorable moments.

'Hard Times' is an obvious choice - one most of you will have heard with its Genesis Elijah feature but picking out others is fairly difficult - but only because of the high quality of each track.

'Sound of the City' is a funky ode to Grit's London which showcases his ability to really rhyme and flow. Strangely, the last three tracks are all ones that really stick in my mind: 'Trapped From The Beginning' (an exploration of love, life and attitudes to both, 'Going Under' (an honest diatribe on drug struggles) and 'Rich & Famous' featuring Baron Samedi on the mic as well as the optimistic production are some of the best tracks on the album.

Elsewhere Grit finds perfect rhyme partners in Kyza, Iron Braydz and Verb T (in thoughtful, serious mode).

The album drops on 27th September and everyone is invited to the album launch on Tuesday 28th Sept 2010, The Social, 5 Little Portland Place, London. The event is free and features full live performances from Grit Grammar, Verb-t & Fliptrix, Genesis Elijah, Iron Braydz, Baron Samedi and Lixx with a special guest appearance from Kyza Smirnoff and DJ CWD holding down the decks all evening. Check out: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=154728551206519&ref=mf for more.

Grit Grammar on 1Xtra's Homegrown Podcast

27th September is the release date on Grit Grammar's first album proper. It features full production from Baron Samedi and extra raps from Verb-T, Genesis Elijah, Kyza, Iron Braydz and Baron Samedi. It all comes on a proper CD with really dope artwork (as you can see) - hooray for physical product.

Anyway, I've previously featured the video for 'Hard Times' featuring Genesis Elijah, but the track is worth mentioning again because it made it onto 1Xtra's homegrown podcast this week. You can download or listen to that by clicking here.

'Hard Times' ft. Genesis Elijah - Grit Grammar (video)

Love this track - perfect production for a sunny July and two MCs absolutely on point. The beat is by Baron Samedi and the track is taken from the album 'Life Music' which drops later in the year on his own BTS Recordings. It is entirely produced by Baron Samedi and features Kyza, Verb-t, Genesis Elijah, Iron Braydz and more. Watch out for a proper official video for this very soon.

You can get the download for this free - now that is a gift you can't refuse:

'Civil Unrest EP' - Genesis Elijah & Beezwax (review)

EPs might be the way forward - a bite size slice of music for your lunch break. Genesis Elijah and Beezwax bring a perfect snack for Hip Hop heads with their 'Civil Unrest' EP. On a Hip Hop base Beezwax lays down toppings of Dub, Reggae and Grime with mainly synth-based flavours. Each track has something in common with another making this a nice, cohesive package.

Lyrically and stylistically Genesis Elijah has matured greatly since some of his earlier material with tighter flows and a real sense of rhyme construction. With a political agenda this MC has something to say beyond the usual claptrap rap that we're used to and using traditional Reggae language and original concepts (especially 'Bellyfull') he makes this release a winner. Buy it now at itunes.

Free Downloads from SonnyJim & Kelakovski, Genesis Elijah, Sam Khan, JPMD, Plan B, Deadly Hunta, DPF & Yogi

Keeping things going for 2010, on a quick tip thing:

Genesis Elijah - 'Power' (produced by Beezwax)
Taken from the forthcoming 'Civil Unrest' EP from Genesis Elijah and producer Beezwax. This is only gonna be free on Bandcamp for a limited time only so get over there now!

SonnyJim - 'The Purple Patch' (produced by Kelakovski)
Look out for more music coming soon from SonnyJim in 2010 with artists such as Illmind, Marco Polo, M-Phazes, Prince Po, AG and J-Zone. Also, SonnyJim's 'Trading Standards' remix project dropping in March 2010 with exclusive remixes by Lotek Hifi, Kosyne Jon Phonics and more.

Sam Kahn - 'Fall Back'
Modern sounding but I'm feeling the lyricism. Check the video too at youtube.

JPMD - 'So Hard'
This one is a new track fresh out of the cooker for 'Know What Time Rhyme 'N' Grind Vol 2'. It features Angry, Ramboss, Grievz and Big Dange. To find out more hit up these places: www.myspace.com/jahstproduction, www.myspace.com/darealrambossneckle and www.twitter.com/jpmd_uk.

Plan B - 'Welcome To Hell'
New direction for this lad, see what you think.

Chronic Redeye - 'Stand Up' ft. Deadly Hunta, DPF & Lyrical T
Taken from 'Ruffneck Intellect Volume One' - "a mixed CD that is set to drag listeners into a realm where no amount of ice or big rims can save the weak from getting crushed under the weight of some real skills. The criteria for the ‘Ruffneck Intellect’ mix series is simple; it’s got to bump hard for the sound systems and it’s got to have depth and lyrical content that goes beyond the standard ignorance that gets peddled by many major labels today. This is real music, this is Hip-Hop and this is something fresh!"

Yogi - 'Hidden Chapter'
Dope as usual Hip Hop from the Midlands.

Free UK Hip Hop from Black The Ripper, Loudmouth Melvin, Py-Ro, Genesis Elijah, Jabba The Kut and Iron Braydz

First up is ‘Just A Dream’ by Black The Ripper. It features Pierre and Loudmouth Melvin and you may remember I posted up the video for this a few weeks ago.

Loudmouth Melvin is busy because he’s also produced this track by Py-Ro – ‘It’s Not Long’ (you might remember this one from the video too).

Track here from Genesis Elijah – ‘I’m Doing It’.

Jabba Tha Kut has an album in the pipeline and here’s a little taster of what’s to come – ‘Get Ya Live-O’ featuring MAB on vocal duties.

Iron Braydz also has an album on the way. ‘Devil May Cry’ will be out sometime next year. In the meantime here’s his track ‘Golden Legacy’.

Lastly, remember the Wio-K track featuring Kyza? Well there’s a dub remix of it for you now.

Tea Sea Records CDs Available!

Big ups to Tom Caruana, UK producer and boss of Tea Sea Records. I've just got home to a fat pack of CDs from him, 7 in all, so thought I'd big them up a little (if that isn't a contradiction?).

He's sent me, in no particular order, 'The Rough Versions: Bootleg remixes by Tom Caruana' (which features tracks from D.I.T.C, J-Live and Busta), 'Tom Caruana Instrumentals Vol. Two' (which features beats from Dr. Syntax's 'Off The Radar' and Wordsmith's 'The Roadman Showcase'), 'Boiler Room Collective: The Mixtape' (with tracks from Dr. Syntax, Wordsmith, SkinnyMan, Genesis Elijah, Supar Novar and loads more), Longusto's 'Back In The Bad Books', 'Tom Caruana Instrumentals Volume 3', 'Boiler Room Collective: The Album' and his own 'Welcome Aboard'.

All of these CDs are available to you from Suspect Packages (just click on the CD names above) for the very reasonable price of £4.99 or less! There are also other bits and pieces available over at SP from TC's stable. I'll be working my way through these and keeping you updated on my progress!

'Northborough Estate Project' - Joker Starr (mixtape review)

YNR entrusted him with the opening track on their label showpiece ‘Feeding Time At The Zoo’ and listening to ‘Northborough Estate Project’ it’s easy to tell why. Joker has upped his game – nothing you have heard can have prepared you for what surely is one of the best releases so far this year.

Officially it’s a mixtape but it does feature full tracks with original production as well as verses over pilfered beats - the former truly stand out. Some heads may not be ready for Starr’s flow which switches without warning from hyperactive to lethargic but this is what makes this charismatic MC truly stand out from the pack.

The unique delivery walks hand in hand with the enigmatic subject matter, whether he’s painting a picture of life in his Slough estate, likening himself to a toreador, talking about the booze or paying the bills Joker Starr makes rap music you want to listen to, like, so you’re actually hearing and hanging on to every word he’s saying.

With production from Beat Butcha, Dan Solo, G-Man, Keith Lawrence, Ahmos and Soliheen, guest raps from Genesis Elijah, Jehst and Micall Parknsun amongst others and an intro from the Gangstarr man himself, Guru, this is a CD worth your £7.99 (from Suspect Packages) – and I’m really endorsing this one, it’s just so flippin’ refreshing to hear Rap that manages to be fun and serious all at once.

Producers - Tea Sea Records Remix Opportunity!

It's that time again when I big up the virtual treasure trove that resides in Tom Caruana's (tea) sea chest. If you pop over to his Tea Sea Records website and click on the button that says 'remixs' (their spelling not mine) then you will be able to download about a million acapellas from some of your favourite UK rapperinos including Wordsmith, Koaste, Dr Syntax, DPF and Genesis Elijah.

All you have to do is join the site, which will get you a whole load more than a bunch of acapellas (so even if you're not a beatsmith, do it). If you make a remix and send it to Tom, he'll feature it on the page and he'll consider it for inclusion in an album of remixes he's planning for later in the year. Can't say fairer than that can you?

Also keep your ears peeled for his new album with Elemental called 'Rebel Without Applause' which will be out soon.

'In Pursuit of Harmony' - Wordsmith (album review)

Nearly 4 years has passed since Wordsmith dropped his debut LP ‘The Roadman Showcase’. Now he’s back with follow up set ‘In Pursuit of Harmony’, an album sure to make a mark on UK Hip Hop this year.

Wordsmith takes a mature approach to many issues – the ins and outs of weed smoking (‘The Cro Debate’), being a father (‘Son’), gun crime (‘Never Would’ve Thought’), the ups and downs of life (‘Carry On’ and ‘Beautiful Life’) and today’s youth (‘They Don’t Seem To Care’). When he’s not proving he could teach an MP a thing or two he’s straight illing out with his partners in rhyme – check ‘Lok Dat’, ‘Runaway’ and the ridiculously tense ‘Leave It Alone’ for a few examples of that.

With perfectly crafted rhymes Wordsmith proves he’s not a one trick pony – he’s a well rounded artist who has fashioned an actual album, rather than a collection of songs. This LP really deserves one of those track by track breakdowns; every one is of such high quality.

With a list of producers like this (Apa-Tight, Vee Kay, Chemo, Beat Butcha, Ido, Tom Caruana and Show n Prove) I don’t have to tell you that the beats are proper, heavy Hip Hop with an emphasis on the uplifting. The fact that there’s not a skip-able track on here speaks volumes – you’ll wanna listen right through.

Mic duties are shared with Foreign Beggars, Dr. Syntax, Dubbledge, Micall Parknsun, Skribblah, Diamond Ruff, Big Ben, Genesis Elijah, Supar Novar and Ahmos –all of whom put in sterling work.

‘In Pursuit of Harmony’ is out now and is available from Suspect Packages as a download or on CD. Support the music, pay the pounds, don’t download! Check the snippets in my last post to get a taste of greatness!

'Memories' ft. Jehst - Joker Starr (free download)

'On The Radar' featured artist Joker Starr is preparing to drop his latest release; the 'Northborough Estate Project'. Now this is a guy who produced a track on Ty's mercury nominated album 'Upwards', has performed in New York as part of Jonzi D's Lyrical Feater and has collaborated with the likes of Estelle.

'Northborough Estate Project', if the tracks he's been dropping on mp3 via the web are anything to go by, is going to be big. The latest track would suggest so too:

Look out for this on May 25th when it will be released and will be available from all the leading download stores.

To see everything I've posted about Joker Starr so far, including free tracks, click here.
